LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY HOSPITAL - NUTRITION EDUCATOR & NUTRITIONAL CLERK
It has been SO exciting to be able to share my passion and knowledge of nutrition in my workplace. As a Nutritional Clerk at Long Island Community Hospital, I have been able to make connections with patients, educate them about their nutritional status and even work with them to choose healthier meal options. Recently, I have had the pleasure of taking on the role of the presenter for Food Demos and Nutrition Education under the supervision of the Nutrition Department and Head Clinical Dietitian. This has included showcasing recipe ideas, answering questions regarding health and even using a spiralizer to make Zucchini pasta. "HARMONY CAFE" - BOARD OF DIRECTORS, SECRETARY - NON-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION
My main intention has always been to serve others for the greater good of society. If we can positively affect our neighbors and small communities, we can only assume a butterfly effect would spread this same positivity around the world. Therefore, taking action locally, no matter how big or small it may seem, is the key to kick starting change. At Harmony Cafe, we are doing just that - bringing members of our community together with food, love and good company!
With a Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics, I have an in-depth understanding about the state of food insecurity and its relationship with nutrition and health concerns. Keeping wholesome food options available in our communities is an important method to decreasing the risk of diabetes, obesity and malnutrition. But it’s not just about making it available, it’s also about creating an environment that is welcoming enough for people to come! That’s why, without question or judgement, every person that comes to us is fed. Everyone sits at a table, receives a meal, talks, laughs, enjoys live music and exists equally. For all of these incredible reasons, I am a proud member of the Board of Directors for this organization! |
"HEALTHY LIVING WITH DEE", AT ORGANICS TODAY FARM - COOKING DEMO/ Q&A
Educating others about food while being surrounded by locally grown produce on a farm? Talk about heaven. This was especially fun! At the local farm in my community, we gathered to discuss the benefits of eating local produce, easy produce to grow in the garden and how to incorporate them into a meal! Some recipes I've made so far are:

LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP - ORGANIZER, EVENT PLANNER, VOLUNTEER
Keeping our bodies healthy should include keeping the Earth healthy! While I am passionate about nutrition and human health, I am also actively concerned about environmental issues that relate to pollution, sustainable farming, water quality and more. For this reason, I organized a volunteer group in my community called L.I. Community Clean-up. The first event was SO successful, and a seriously great time. We picked up 2- 60 gallon brown Lowe's bags of trash. THAT IS A LOT! It was such a beautiful event to see people come together with similar values and volunteer their Sunday morning to the greater good of the community. I have so much gratitude to those who became involved, and are still involved as I continue to keep this thing moving! |
